A long time ago, my land lady in Canterbury confessed she had never been to the Canterbury Cathedral in her life. I was astonished at that time as I could not think of any roman, for instance, not visiting, just like my land lady, the main historic monument of Rome: the Colosseum. However I have to admit, I did the same with Maxxi, the National Museum for Contemporary Arts in Rome. I only went there few weeks ago after repeating to myself for more than a year:"It's in Rome, I will go sooner or later..".
I really enjoyed the visit, Maxxi building is really innovative; you would not have the chance to see many more modern/stylish buildings like that in Rome. However, I must say,the mood is changing and the contemporary Architects, like Zaha Hadid, finally found their ground in Italy. I was impressed by the building itself more than by the various paintings, sculptures and curious creations of the exhibit. In fact I could appreciate more the concept which gave birth to the creation than the creation itself. De gustibus...Maybe I have not been given the proper tools to "understand" this contemporary objects.
Or, maybe, Zaha Hadid's oeuvre is such a work of art that the rest seems not that relevant.
Visiting Maxxi you will have the impression of being abroad, though remaining in Rome.
And how about these shoes created by Zaha Hadid? Architect/Shoe Designer.
